Puppy raising is the biggest gift a volunteer can give this organization — and the best-supported. You take a Hearts of Gold puppy home for roughly sixteen to eighteen months and give it an ordinary, loving life: errands, doorbells, school pickups, quiet evenings. That everyday world is the foundation every service and therapy dog is built on.
No experience is needed, and all home types are welcome — apartments, farms, families, singles, retirees. We teach you everything at group classes and stay close with one-on-one coaching. The organization covers the puppy's food, veterinary care, and training costs; you provide the home, the time, and the heart.
What a raiser's day looks like
A morning walk practicing calm past the neighbor's cat. A nap under your desk. Fifteen minutes of name games after lunch, a trip to the hardware store where nothing scary happens, and an evening settle on a mat while the family eats. None of it is complicated — it is just consistent, and it is quietly building a working dog.

With tears — every raiser, every time. And every raiser will tell you it was worth it. You are not losing a dog; you are handing someone else years of independence that your year made possible. Many raisers meet their puppy's new partner at graduation and sign up for the next puppy on the way out the door.

Event-day handler assistant
Help our team at community events and demonstrations — managing meet-and-greets, water bowls, and the crowd that always gathers.
Transport volunteer
Drive dogs to vet appointments, training sessions, and evaluations across our corner of Missouri.
Photography volunteer
Document the journey — puppy days, training milestones, graduations — so sponsors and supporters can watch the story unfold.
